Abstract
Purpose
To assess and compare the effectiveness of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) in managing myofascial pain dysfunction syndrome (MPDS).
Methods
Forty patients with MPDS between 18 and 40 years were randomly divided into two groups based on RDC/TMD axis I. Group A (20) patients received PBMT biweekly for 3 weeks, and group B (20) received skeletal muscle relaxants (SMR) thrice daily for 2 weeks. The pain was assessed by the visual analog scale. In addition, the inter-incisal distance was measured by using a vernier caliper.
Results
By the paired T-test, a comparison was made between baseline and post-therapy values of VAS and mouth opening in the case and control groups; a considerable variation was observed between the initial and final values (p < 0.05).
Conclusion
The results revealed a statistically significant amount of pain reduction after PBMT; the majority of patients reported improvement in mouth opening, compared with the SMR group. PBMT is non-invasive, without known side effects, and effective treatment for conservative management of myofascial pain—it is an exemplary approach.
Trial registration
This trial is registered under the clinical trial registry of India (CTRI/2021/04/032609)
