The use of lasers in peri-implant disease treatment and their efficacy in inflammation reduction: A narrative review

Abstract

Aim

This review aims to assess the efficacy of lasers alone or as an adjunct to conventional therapy in treating peri-implant diseases.

Materials/methods

An electronic review was conducted on PubΜed using the appropriate keywords for articles published in scientific dental journals in English from 2000 to date. The selection or rejection of records was based on inclusion and exclusion criteria accordingly.

Results

The search provided 449 records. Eventually, 19 studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. The included articles presented significant heterogeneity in the treatment protocols, and most of them had a short-term follow-up of about 6 months. Lasers’ efficacy in reducing inflammation was slightly better or equal to that of conventional treatment modalities but only for a short-term period of observation ranging from 3 to 6 months.

Conclusions

Using laser as an adjunctive treatment or as a monotherapy in the treatment of peri-implant diseases seems to have a minor clinical benefit in short-term periods compared to other peri-implant treatment modalities. However, there is little evidence to support these findings, and more clinical studies should be conducted in order to confirm the above.
