Abstract

TMD is considered to be a common term as a majority of patient reports with any one of these symptoms in their entire lifetime. Considering it to be a multifactorial disorder, various treatment modalities have been tried upon. But a definite treatment has not yet been established.

Purpose

To evaluate and compare the effectiveness of occlusal splints and low-level laser therapy in TMJ pain patients.

Materials and methods

A total of 40 patients who reported to the department with TMJ pain were taken into study. Mouth opening and VAS score of these patients were being measured before treatment, during treatment, and after treatment. The patients were being randomly allotted to either of groups—group I (splint) or group II (laser).

Results

Patients in group I had statistically significant improvement (p value < 0.001) in mouth opening, and patients in group II had statistically improvement in pain reduction (p value < 0.001).

Conclusion

The inference obtained from the present study points to the fact that both splints and low-level lasers are efficient in its own way to reduce the pain and to increase the mouth opening-related TMJ symptoms. However when individual comparisons are made, splints are effective in providing a lasting effect for mouth opening and low-level laser therapy for pain reduction.
