Abstract
Purpose
Photodynamic therapy is a novel therapeutic approach aimed primarily as an antibacterial method for the oral cavity. However, being a low-level laser therapy, photodynamic therapy could possibly show potential as a modulative method in managing aspects of the inflammation process in the oral tissues.
Methods
The presented study uses EPR to explore the relationship between three common photosensitizers and 3-maleimido-proxyl which is a marker for conformational changes in the albumin structure. Albumins are proteins which take central part in the inflammatory cascade in the body including the oral tissues.
Results
The results show the pronounced potential of the tested photoactive molecules to restore the albumin molecule and neutralize oxidative stress in the tissues.
Conclusions
Photodynamic therapy-induced restoration of the albumin molecule in oral tissues with selected photoactive substances could be a viable inflammation-modulating pathway.
